The Walkden’s (1961 – 1971)

50 years ago this month, my family sold their cottage on Key Hole Bay. My memories (aged 4 to 14) of the cottage and the lake are still vivid as if they happened yesterday. We first kept our boat docked at Potter’s then moved to the ‘New Marina’ after we bought a new larger boat. Remember the boat up on the rocks at the ‘new’ marina with the ad- “Don’t Let This Happen To You”? My best memories are: loading up with penny candy at Potter’s, walking to Bolyea’s following the hydro wires to buy more candy, making friends with Michael Orlowski(sp), evenings playing Monopoly and Clue, running around from dusk till dawn playing, swimming, fishing, boating, waterskiing only to come inside after mom rang the dinner bell on the porch! Amazingly enough, even at 10 years old I was allowed to take a boat out by myself only if I could pull start it. I remember the regattas and although I was too young to go, the dances at the community centre. Joe Bolyea built our bunkhouse and I think he may have built the cottage too. Robbie and Ilva Fuhrman owned a cottage two north from us, they were great friends of our family. Three of my siblings and I are visiting the lake this September, the reminiscing will be hard to keep up with!
